A native of Lafayette, California, LTC Schmitt earned his commission from the Reserve Officer Training Corps at the University of California, Davis in 1999. He holds a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Biological Sciences from the University of California, Davis and earned a Master of Science Degree in Microbiology and Immunology from the Vanderbilt University Medical Center in 2009. His research and publications leveraged x-ray crystallography for the structural determination and functional analysis of protein neurotoxins.
His military education includes the Aviation Officer Basic Course, the U.S. Army Rotary Wing Aviator Course, the Electronic Warfare Officer’s Course, the Army Airborne School, the Army Air Assault School, the Aviation Officer Advanced Course, the UH-60 Maintenance Test Pilot Course, the Army Intermediate Program Manager’s Course, Army Acquisition Basic Course, and the Army Command and General Staff College. LTC Schmitt is a Senior Army Aviator and a member of the Army Acquisition Corps.
Prior to serving in the Acquisition Corps, he served as a UH-60 Assault Helicopter Platoon Leader in 9-101st Aviation Regiment at Fort Campbell, Kentucky and participated in the invasion of Iraq in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. He served as the Aviation Liaison Officer to the 502nd Infantry Brigade during combat operations in Mosul, Iraq. Additionally, he served in D Company 5-101st Aviation Regiment as the Aviation Unit Maintenance (AVUM) company commander in both Tikrit, Iraq and Fort Campbell, Kentucky. LTC Schmitt also earned a position as Assistant Professor while serving as instructor and course director within the Department of Chemistry and Life Science at the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York.
His acquisition assignments include Assistant Product Manager in both the Transport and Special Equipment Mission Aircraft product offices within the Fixed Wing Project Office, Assistant Product Manager in the Apache Production and Fielding Product Office, and Assistant Program Manager, Joint Multi-Role Technical Demonstration. Most recently, LTC John Schmitt served as the Military Deputy in the Aviation and Missile Research, Development, and Engineering Center at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama and now serves as the CH-47F Block II Product Manager.
LTC Schmitt’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Medal Fourth Award, Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, National Defense Service Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Iraqi Campaign Service Medal with Four Campaign Stars, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Oversees Service Ribbon with Oak Leaf Cluster, Meritorious Unit Commendation with Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Superior Unit Award, and Combat Action Badge.
LTC Schmitt currently lives in Huntsville, AL with his wife Sarah and two children Avery and Miles.
